Cooking

  • Be cautious about spilled oil or grease and check for accumulated grease.
  • Do not keep combustible material near or on a burner; e.g. clothing, dish towel, paper towel, oven mitt, cutting board.
  • Be aware of frying with oil (overheated oil ignites).
  • Do not leave food on the stovetop unattended, even baking requires some attention.
  • Use a timer to remind yourself to check the oven.
  • Do not use Alcohol or medication or drugs that could make you drowsy while cooking.
  • Have an extinguisher nearby for a possible grease fire.
  • To smother the fire use a mitt to slide the lid over the pan.
  • Turn off the stove.
  • NEVER use water which will only make the fire spread.
  • If unable to extinguish quickly, get out and call 911.
